David S. Weiss MD: My IADMS background
Profile Pages Profile

Shortly after I began my practice as a dance medicine orthopedist, a new professional association was founded – IADMS.  I became a charter member, attended meetings, gave presentations, and – most importantly – met members with diverse backgrounds from around the world.  I learned much, and this improved the medical care I provided to all my patients.

I have helped govern IADMS, serving on the Board (1996-2003), including as Vice President (1999-2001), Acting Treasurer (2001), and President (1999-2001).  I helped run IADMS (“operations”), taking bids for, planning, and running Annual Meetings in 2000 (Miami), 2001 (Spain), 2002 (New York) and 2003 (London); organizing 2004 (San Francisco); taking the bid for 2005 (Stockholm).  I hosted the 2002 meeting in New York with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.  In those early years I streamlined the abstract submission process, created the Lunch Roundtablesreorganized and edited the Newsletter.

Over many years I worked to improve the content and organization of the meetings, serving on the Program Committee (1999-2003, 2010-2015; Chair 2001-2002), establishing and co-chairing Musculoskeletal Medicine Day (2010, 2012-2014).  As a member of the Continuing Education Committee (2008-2015; Chair 2013-2014) I helped arrange for credits for healthcare practitioners.  As part of the Strategic Plan, I advocated for increased medical content; this resulted in “Clinical Symposia” which I coordinated (2009-2015).

I served as IADMS Webmaster (2001-2015), growing the IADMS website from a half-dozen pages stored on my home computer to over 400 pages, and in the process transferring the site to two different web systems, including the YourMembership.com platform.

I presently serve on the Editorial Board of the
Journal for Dance Medicine & Science, and previously served on the Editorial Board from 1999 to 2005.  I served as Deputy Editor of the journal from 2005 to 2015.
