Around Town

Helsinki has various methods for people to get around town and see all the wonderful sights the city has to offer.

Walking
Helsinki is a compact European city making it easy to see all of the sights that are within the city center. You can find a walking map at a tourist information center to see some of the best routes.

Bike
You can rent a bike and ride on the popular “Baana: route in the center of the city.” This route was built for pedestrians and cyclists to travel around the city more conveniently. There are 1200 kilometers of bike paths that make this a highly accessible and affordable way to get around the city. Rental prices have been quoted at €5 for 24 hours, or €10 for a week. Visit https://www.myhelsinki.fi/en/info/getting-around for more information.

Ferry
The Suomenlinna Ferry travels between the Market Square and the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress all year round. Tickets are valid for 24 hours, cost €5, and can be purchased at a ticket machine in the Market Square.

Bus
Helsinki Region Transport operates buses throughout the region. For bus stations, timetables, and ticket prices visit the Helsinki Regional Transport website.

Tram
Trams are the best and main mode of public transport within the city. The Tram ⅔ is the sightseeing tram in Helsinki. For an architectural route, hop on bus number 4. There are route maps available to see which route best fits your sightseeing needs. Single tickets are €2.50 at a machine and €3.20 from the driver. Day tickets starts at €9/day. Visit a tourist center for more information on where to buy tickets and to get a map.

Metro
This is the best way to get out of the city to visit Finland’s nature sights. You can take the metro to the world’s most northern station from Matinkylä to Mellunmäki. Tickets can be purchased at a metro station.

Taxi
Like most major cities, taxis can be ordered by phone, from taxi stands throughout the city, or hailed in the street. They accept cash and credit card. A taxi between the airport and city center takes about 20 minutes and costs €40-45.

A citizen of the European Union or European Economic Area does not need a visa to enter Finland, with the exception of citizens of the United Kingdom who must have a valid passport.
