A Day for Teachers

Applying dance science and somatics to the language of teaching technique

For the past few decades, studies and research in dance science and somatic practices have become more available to teachers involved in the training and education of dancers. While these areas of study inform dance technique, teachers can struggle with how to integrate this material into the traditional dance technique class. The focus of A Day for Teachers 2013 will be developing language and cueing that can enhance teaching practices using these recent developments. Three dance-related areas will be examined: (1) anatomy and kinesiology, (2) current research in the dance sciences such as biomechanics and motor learning, and (3) somatic practices. Experts in the field will be asked to share their experiences to describe how they have developed language, cueing, and imagery using these fields to enhance their dance technique classes. Special guest William (Bill) Evans will give a movement session integrating the language of somatic practice into the dance class.
