David S. Weiss MD: My professional background

Dr. Weiss is a member of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health; Associate Director of the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital; and Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Weiss received his BA degree from Brandeis University and his MD degree from Yale University School of Medicine.  After completing a surgical internship at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital in New York City.  During his residency he obtained additional training with Mr. Justin Howse, FRCS, consultant to the Royal Ballet School (London, UK).   He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at University of Chicago Medical Center with Bruce Reider, MD.

In addition to his roles at IADMS, Dr. Weiss has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Performing Arts Medicine Association. Dr. Weiss serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal for Dance Medicine & Science, and previously served on the Editorial Board from 1999 to 2005.  He served as Deputy Editor of the journal from 2005 to 2015.  He has published research in the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, Osteoporosis International, and the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Dr. Weiss is a member of the Board of Directors of the Dance Research Foundation, publisher of Ballet Review, and also serves as their webmaster.
