Dance Educator Award

The Dance Educators’ Committee is calling for nominations for the 2020 Dance Educators Award.

The recipient of this recognition will show evidence of integrating principles of Dance Medicine and Science through their teaching practice and to acknowledge their influence on future dance teachers. The recipient of the award will be announced on October 15, 2020, through the IADMS website and Facebook page and will be recognized at the IADMS Annual Meeting 2021. In addition to recognition, the award winner will receive a one-year membership to IADMS.

The 2019 IADMS Dance Educators’ Committee Dance Educator Award was presented to Nico Kolokythas, who joins previous recipients: Janice Plastino, Janet Karin, Emma Redding, Tom Welsh, and Stevie Oakes.

The criteria for the award describe a dance educator who:

  • demonstrates integration and implementation of dance science and research into the classroom
  • has developed a system of training based on a sound knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and/or psychology
  • can address artistic and pedagogical priorities, within a scientific context, to further dance teaching and training
  • demonstrates innovative thinking in teaching and is not afraid to challenge myths and historical methods
  • demonstrates an ongoing commitment to furthering the field of dance, dance science, and IADMS as an organization
  • has inspired students and colleagues with their understanding, teaching, and application of dance science

Nominators can be students or fellow educators. They should provide a 300 word essay or letter of nomination that will help the committee understand the nominees’ commitment to IADMS and the field of dance science within education. We have provided criteria for you to base your nomination on, but, of equal importance, the essay or nomination letter should illustrate how important and influential this educator has been to the nominator or their colleagues. Please note that we will publicly use this essay to promote IADMS and the Dance Educators’ Committee through social media.

The nominee will be contacted to provide further information, based on the criteria listed above, for the committee to consider. This should include specific examples of how they integrate dance science into their teaching.

  • Nominations are due June 15, 2020. These should be sent to with the subject line “DEA Nomination”
  • If available to you, please include contact information for the nominee
  • Nominees will be contacted to provide additional information by July 15, 2020
  • The recipient will be selected by the Education Committee and announced in October 2020 through the IADMS website and Facebook page

Please note that members of the IADMS Dance Educators’ Committee or current Board of Directors are not eligible to nominate or be nominated for this award.*

We look forward to receiving your nominations!
